Renewable Resources

These days, green remodeling does not mean you have to visit the salvage yard and have your kitchen look like a craft project gone awry.  Technology has advanced providing renewable resources in practical mediums.  The first material that probably comes to mind is bamboo which is actually a grass that grows rapidly and is used in flooring.  You probably don’t think about paper and glass as renewable resources to use in your home construction.

When I first read about recycled paper tiles I thought there was no way flimsy recycled paper would hold up as anything but decoration as a tile.  These tiles are made from recycled paper, and non-petroleum resins.  The resin used gives the tiles deep browns, greys and blacks and the dense reconstitution makes the tiles tough and thick.

If you love a modern mosaic look then recycled glass countertops might be more your style.  The recycled glass comes in a solid surface or as small rectangular tiles.  The glass comes from used bottles, old windows, and manufacturing waste from window and windshield production.  If you prefer more of a consistent color, there are companies that make tiles with a soft iridescent sheen.  Another company makes solid surfaces that feel and are as durable as stone surfaces but are made of shatter proof glass.  The surface is smooth and shows movement like stone but is created from the recycled bottles.
